I would guess there is a point where i have to drill through the hardi and attach to underlying house frame studs.

It should be able to withstand the drill.
The kind that are a flat piece of metal you put in flat ways along the face of the palnk and then turn 90 degrees to lock in place might come back out the type the are basically a spring steel then compresses to install then pops into place over the top of the plank you will probably never be able to work back out.
Hardiplank is a cement board.
I would call a company that sells it and then you will know for sure.
However do not overtighten the screws since the hardiplank siding can become damaged with excessive pressure.
