Pick up your spring and look into it.
For compression and extension springs.
On the other hand a left hand winding spring is wound in an anti clockwise direction and has its end of wire on the left side.
Knowing the wind direction of right left hand wound spring is important while working with the torsion springs easily determined by holding it in hand.
Thus they have their end of wire on the right side.
Compression springs can be left or right hand coiled.
In most cases you can determine the wind of your garage door torsion spring by using the color coded system on the cones at the end of the spring.
In applications such as one spring operating inside an other it is necessary to coil the springs so that the helices are in opposite directions right and left.
Please remember the side of the door a spring is located on does not indicate the wind of the spring.
If you are screwing a compression spring onto a mating part you would want the coil direction to matc h that of the threads.
Sometimes though you wouldn t want the pitch of the spring to get caught up in the pitch of the threaded mating part.

As for the torsion springs this system applies a little differently.
It is hard to tell the direction of winding from the front side.
